What is Repowering?

Your boating adventures don’t have to end with an aging engine. Replacing your engine with a new Yamaha outboard can help give your boat a new lease on life without skipping a beat to keep you out on the water.

Industry-Leading Reliability

Research shows that reliability is the most important thing to boaters, and repowering your boat is a great cost-effective way of making sure your boat is always ready for your next trip. Known for our top-tier reliability, Yamaha outboards give you the extra peace of mind that your boat will run for many years to come. It's no wonder why everyone from oceanographers to water taxi operators to families trust Yamaha outboards to power their days.

An older engine can mean more frequent trips to the dealership for maintenance. Repowering with a new outboard will give you peace of mind knowing your boat is always running at it’s best.

A new outboard also means a new warranty, giving you added protection from the unexpected. All you’ll need is a quick trip to the dealership and you’ll be back up and running in no time.

Barn find? Maybe your hidden gem has a solid hull, but the mechanical components leave you worried. Repower an older hull for years of continued enjoyment without breaking the bank.

Next-Generation Technology

Yamaha outboards are on the cutting-edge of technological innovation. From pioneering the first four stroke for bass boats to the first single-engine joystick to alternative power options and fuels, we continue to push the industry and transform your boating experience for the better. Perhaps that's why boaters have honoured Yamaha with 24 consecutive Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI®) Awards - something no other outboard brand has achieved.

Increased fuel economy is a top priority to make sure you can go the distance without all the stops to the marina in between. A new outboard will be optimized to keep you out on the water for longer with more money in your pocket.

The upgrades don’t stop there. Newer outboards are engineered with noise reduction in mind with the use of sound-dampening technologies, quieter exhaust systems and more. This helps to make sure you stand out on the water for all the right reasons.

Yamaha's commitment to innovation is most evident in its fully integrated rigging and control systems, which elevate performance, safety, and overall user experience. These technologies are especially valuable during repowers, allowing boaters to bring their vessels up to modern standards without replacing the whole boat. Pairing your new Yamaha outboard with genuine Yamaha rigging components gives you a PowerMatched boat, meaning not only can you expect the highest standard of quality, but it also includes an extended warranty on your components to match the length of your outboard warranty.

Keep the Memories Going

Your boat is already tailor-made to fit your needs. By repowering, you increase the lifespan of your boat to make sure you can keep everything to your liking for as long as possible.

Make repowering easy by visiting an authorized Yamaha dealer. From pricing to installation and everything in between, Yamaha dealerships and technicians will provide their expert opinion to find your best fit to get even more out of your boat than thought possible.

FAQs

My current outboard is not a Yamaha. Can I still repower with a Yamaha?
Yes! Switching to a Yamaha outboard may include upgrading other parts of your boat (such as electronics, controls, etc.). Be sure to talk to your local Yamaha dealer for all compatibility requirements.
When should I repower?
While there’s no specific time that repowering is required, there are a few signs to look out for. If your existing engine isn’t performing like it used to, if the maintenance costs become more expensive than the cost of a new engine, or if you’re just looking to get that new boat feeling back, it might be time to look at a new outboard.
Can I increase the horsepower?
Boat manufacturers produce a “horsepower rating” – a calculation that considers the length, width, transom height and other stability factors to make sure your boat can handle the engine. Be sure to check your boat’s horsepower rating to make sure you’re not under or overpowering your boat. If your boat can handle it, then you can upgrade away.
Do I have to update my controls as well?
Sometimes replacement controls (remote control boxes, cables, helm, etc.) are required to get your new outboard up and running. If you do have to update your controls, speak to your local Yamaha dealer about including these components in your repower financing through Yamaha Financial Services.
Are there any other hidden parts, equipment or costs to consider?
Your local Yamaha dealer will be able to give you a full cost breakdown for your boat. They will consider everything from rigging, the starter battery, propeller and everything in between. They will also do a thorough review of your entire boat to ensure that both the engine and the hull are ready hit the water.
